Acurio Ventures
Their Journey
Acurio Ventures was founded by Ander Michelena and Jon Uriarte, the brains behind Ticketbis – a secondary ticketing market for fans to buy and sell diverse kinds of tickets (e.g. concerts, sport events). Ticketbis was acquired by eBay in 2016 for a reported €165 million. Ticketbis is considered as one of the top startups in Spanish history.
Ticketbis operated in nearly 50 countries around the world and employed over 450 employees across 14 offices in Europe, Central and South America, Asia and Australia. As of today, the company is settled in Bilbao with approximately €140 million under management (as of Jan. 2024).
Acurio Ventures has been, and continues to be, run by entrepreneurs. They understand the hardships of what it is to be a founder and empathize with the challenges they face. Their goal is to do what’s necessary to maximize the odds of a favorable outcome for their portfolio companies.
The company uses its vast resources and experience to operate marketplace and e-commerce business models, scaling enterprises internationally from the ground up. Acurio Ventures has become a remarkable success story, as they work towards becoming a leading European VC firm.
Acurio Ventures current portfolio includes Spanish startups (Jeff, Lookiero, Lingokids, Spotahome, Seedtag), and other companies in Europe and the Americas such as Barkyn (Portugal), Preply (Ukraine), Refurbed (Austria), Paul Camper (Germany). Kodit (Finland), Rebag (US) or Zenklub (Brazil).
Bright Prospects Ahead:
Acurio Ventures has launched a €30 million fund of funds program focused on the European opportunity, investing directly into other European VCs. The money has been raised from private individuals and family offices with no public investment involved and is a fully separate entity to Acurio Ventures’ direct investment vehicle.
Thus far, the fund has already invested in Hoxton Ventures, Left Lane Capital, Speedinvest, Crane Venture Partners and Firstminute Capital, contributing an average of €2 million per fund.
Acurio Ventures has closed its first fund, Acurio Ventures I, with €66.5 million from private investors. The capital fund, committed by the founding partners of Acurio Group and others, brought their total investment capacity to aproximatly €110 million.
Acurio Ventures is part of the broader Acurio Group, which includes Acurio RE I, a real estate holding company listed on the Spanish alternative stock exchange (BME Growth) with assets valued at over €70 million, bringing the group’s investment firepower to nearly €200 million.
