Sytze Koolen is a European investor with a particular interest in the Dutch marketplace. Koolen’s preferred scope of investments is in enterprise software, mobile finance, fraud detection, cyber security, e-commerce platforms and financial technology. 

He is currently the Managing Director of NS8, a human behavioural analytics and fraud detection software company based in Amsterdam in The Netherlands. Koolen has over 15 years’ experience in the field of business development and FinTech.

He is currently the Managing Director of NS8, a human behavioural analytics and fraud detection software company based in Amsterdam in The Netherlands. Koolen has over 15 years’ experience in the field of business development and FinTech. He has worked in high ranking roles at notable financial companies such as American Express, Klarna, Paidy, and Clubcollect. 

Early Years

Sytze Koolen was born in Amsterdam, in The Netherlands and was educated in both the Netherlands and the United States. He graduated from Maastricht University in 2004 with a Master of Sciences degree in International Business Studies. During his time at Maastricht, Koolen spent a year in an exchange program at the Indiana University in the US – Kelley School of Business, where he obtained an MBA.

Koolen has since invested in over 30 companies and founded three startups. Between the years 2002 and 2005, he launched the Netherlands-based China Investments Netherlands, an investment firm focused on growing relations between China and The Netherlands by investing in Chinese companies that are interested in expanding into Europe. 

Location

Sytze serves the Dutch and Asian markets. His focus is on investing in Dutch companies looking to expand their business into Asia. Although Koolen is interested in Dutch expansion to all Asian countries, he is particularly focused on Japan. The investor has also taken an active role in assisting Chinese companies to invest in The Netherlands by introducing them to potential Dutch investment partners and companies to invest in within the Netherlands. 

Remarkable Investments

Sytze Koolen takes part in all stages of investment but is specifically interested in seed and early stage investments. He has both successfully invested in and exited in a range of tech companies. Sytze invested heavily in e-commerce and cybersecurity platforms such as Cirrosecure, a company specialising in cloud data security. The product allows clients to have a true view and understanding of their assets with zero IT disruption. He invested in Cirrosure in 2014 and successfully exited when it was acquired by firewall giant, Palo Alto Networks. 
Koolen then invested in Truevault a cybersecurity company that focuses on Personally Identifiable Information (PII) protection. He also invested in Worklife, a productivity and employee engagement app which was acquired by multinational tech conglomerate Cisco. Another major investment was in Sproutling, an information and wearable tech company that aims to make parenting more effective by providing parents real-time information regarding their children’s sleep status, temperature and expected nap and awake times through the use of a data measuring band. Koolen made the investment in 2015 and exited soon after when it was acquired by international toy manufacturer Mattel.

In August 2018 it was announced that Sytze Koolen would attend the Singapore-based Meet Magento conference and speak on behalf of NS8, the cyber security and fraud detection company, of which he is the European Managing Director.
