About Paul Heydon

In 1990 Heydon earned his BA – Honours in Business Administration from the Ivey Business School at the University of Ontario in Canada. Nine years later he obtained his Master of Business Administration degree with a focus on finance in 1999, also from the Ivey Business School. 

Paul Heydon’s career in investment banking began in 1999 at ING Barings, where he was an associate within the media and corporate finance teams. He advised on a number of successful IPOs, such as Yukes which raised US$8 million, NetGem which raised US€65 million, and Fox Kids which raised US$420 million respectively. Between the years 2001 and 2004, Heydon served as the head of Interactive Entertainment and Media at Commerzbank Securities where he advised and oversaw numerous lucrative investments and buy-backs within the gaming industry. In July 2007 Heydon was appointed the managing director of Avista Partners, a financial services firm that provides discreet advisory services to clients within the gaming sphere. Here Heydon held the role of strategic advisor for Atari and TeliaSonera International Carrier. He was also responsible for advising clients on how to find lucrative investments and on obtaining funding.

Based in London in the UK, Heydon’s investment portfolio spans across Europe, to Asia and Silicon Valley. Notably, Paul has invested in Helsinki Area in Finland, Barcelona in Spain, Seattle and San Francisco Bay Area in the US, as well as Ontario in Canada and London in the UK. 

Remarkable Investments

In October 2011 Paul Heydon was an angel investor in the seed round of funding for Supercell, a mobile gaming development company based in Helsinki, Finland. The company has developed some of the most well-known mobile games to date, such as Clash of Clans and Hay Day. By 2013 the company had generated US$2.4 million in revenue. In October of 2009, Heydon invested as an angel investor in the Series A round of Unity Technologies. The company created one of the world’s most widely used platforms for 3D development, allowing clients to utilise rich real-time and interactive 2D, 3D, AR and VR experiences.

In July 2018, Gamasutra announced that FRVR, a Helsinki, Finland based HTML5 games publisher has secured funding in the seed round from Accell and angel investors Paul Heydon and David Helgason, the former CEO of Unity. The seed round secured a total of US$3million and has hopes to further their reach within the instant messenger and browser gaming industry.
